How do headphones work?

The first step to repairing your earphones or headset (we’ll just refer to them as headphones for the rest of the article) is to understand how they function. To give a very basic explanation, the music, or whatever media you are hearing in your headphones, has been converted to data. This data is converted to electrical signals which are then sent to magnets within each earpiece, causing them to vibrate, in turn causing a thin membrane to vibrate as well which, finally, causes the air around it to vibrate… also known as sound. There are many different types of headphones available such as wireless versions like the waterproof ZenEar BT model and wired options like these earphones for Asus ZenFones.

Discover how to repair your audio equipment

Nothing is more frustrating than arriving at the gym or joining a video meeting and realizing your headphones are not working. If you have wireless headphones, it could be a connectivity or battery issue. Ensure your headphones are fully charged and the volume is turned up sufficiently. If your headphones are connected via Bluetooth, it's a good idea to unpair them and then reconnect. To do this, go to the Bluetooth settings of your device, remove the headphones from the list, wait a few moments then try again to pair the headphones. These instructions will vary depending on your devices; with some headphones, you may have to press or hold down a pairing button. If your headphones are connected wirelessly to your computer, try unplugging any other external accessories as PCs usually prioritize wired connections over wireless ones. For wired headphones, see if there is damage to the cable by gently bending down the length of the cable while audio is playing in your ears. When doing this, if you happen to hear any bits of audio or static, there is a problem with your cable and it needs to be replaced. Thankfully you can find many original Asus wired headphones on our site for an affordable price. It's also always a good idea to keep the headphone port of your PC or smartphone clean as dirt or dust can jeopardize your connection. You can do this with isopropyl alcohol and some cotton swabs. To be sure it is a problem with your headphones and not the device itself, you can always connect the headphones to a different device to see if they work. Sometimes if your drivers or OS (depending on what device you are using) needs to be updated, it will not recognize connected audio equipment, whether wired or wireless, so it is recommended to ensure you are up to date.
