Before attempting any repairs, consult your Asus laptop's user manual or support page for specific disassembly instructions. Also, power down your laptop completely and disconnect it from the power source.

Steps:

  • Power Down and Disconnect: Completely turn off your laptop and unplug it from the power source. Remove any external devices like USB drives or headphones.
  • Disassemble the Laptop: This will typically involve removing the back cover, battery (if removable), and keyboard. Be mindful of screws and remember their placement for reassembly. Check out our YouTube page to watch our tech expert show you how to disassemble your laptop model!
  • Locate the Touchpad: Once you've accessed the internal components, locate the touchpad. It's typically a flat rectangular component with a ribbon cable connected to it.
  • Disconnect the Touchpad Cable: Gently disconnect the ribbon cable connecting the touchpad to the motherboard. Use tweezers if needed, but avoid pulling on the cable itself. Locate the latch or lock mechanism securing the cable and release it carefully.
  • Unscrew the Touchpad: There might be screws holding the touchpad in place. Use your screwdriver to remove them carefully. Some models might use clips instead of screws.
  • Remove the Old Touchpad: Once disconnected and unscrewed, carefully lift the old touchpad out of its slot.
  • Prepare the Replacement: If your new touchpad comes with pre-applied thermal paste (a heat transfer material), you don't need to worry about this step. Otherwise, apply a thin layer of thermal paste to the designated area on the underside of the new touchpad.
  • Install the New Touchpad: Carefully position the new touchpad in its designated slot and secure it with the screws (or clips) you removed earlier.
  • Reconnect the Touchpad Cable: Reconnect the touchpad's ribbon cable to the motherboard port. Ensure it's properly seated and secure the latch or lock mechanism.
  • Reassemble the Laptop: Carefully reassemble your laptop in the reverse order of disassembly. Make sure all the screws and components are back in their proper places and securely fastened. For extra guidance, we also offer this helpful Asus laptop disassembly guide.
  • Power On and Test: Once fully reassembled, power on your laptop and test the new touchpad. Ensure it functions properly and responds to clicks and gestures.
