ROG Ally 2 on the Horizon? What We Might See in Asus’ Next Handheld

The ROG Ally made a bold entrance into the handheld gaming world, standing out with its performance-focused design, sharp display, and full Windows OS experience. The original Ally is definitely standing the test of time, but, as always, everyone wants to know: what's next? Rumors are flying about possible new features, and even a collaboration with Microsoft for an Asus Xbox device! Our team and many other are looking to Computex 2025 as a potential announcement time, although of course there is no official news from Asus yet.

Here at Asus Accessories, we’ve supported the Ally community since day one with official replacement parts and upgrades. As discussion of the next-gen Ally heat up across Reddit, YouTube, and leak blogs, we’re taking a closer look at what might be coming in Asus’ next gaming console—and how you can prep your current rig in the meantime.

1. A bigger battery—or better battery life

One of the top user complaints from the 2023 Ally was its battery life. Hardcore gamers know the feeling—just as you’re hitting your stride in Elden Ring, the battery dips into the red. It was improved with the Ally X, which has double the capacity (a whopping 80Wh battery) but still, one user on Reddit mentioned, "The Windows platform is just very bad at power efficiency at the moment," highlighting that, despite the larger battery, software optimization remains an area for improvement.

Rumors suggest that the ROG Ally 2, as some are calling it, will tackle this with either a larger battery or next-gen AMD chips built on a more power-efficient architecture. Combined with smarter software tuning, we could see a serious leap forward in unplugged gaming time. There is speculation about a potential 99Wh battery for the next Asus console which could mean up to 3.5 hours playtime for AAA titles.

In the meantime, if your current battery performance is lagging, consider replacing your charger or internal power components. After all, all electronics batteries do have a lifespan. The Ally's battery, like most lithium-ion batteries, generally falls in the range of: 2 to 3 years of regular use, or 300–500 full charge cycles, but this can be extended with proper battery care! Our ROG Ally charger replacements and OEM batteries are official and easy to install.

2. OLED or Mini LED?

Display upgrades are one of the most exciting possibilities. Leaks suggest Asus may jump to OLED or Mini LED tech, giving gamers even more vibrant colors, deeper blacks, and outdoor visibility. A more sure possibility seems like a larger screen regardless of tech - maybe even a full inch of added display.

If you’re sticking with your current model for a while, protect your investment. We offer tempered glass screen protectors and display modules for the ROG Ally and Ally X—all sourced directly from Asus and engineered for pixel-perfect clarity.

3. Cooler, Quieter Performance

Another expected advancement? Thermals. While the Ally’s cooling is solid for its size, long sessions can lead to heat buildup and fan whine.

Redditors have speculated that the next Ally might adopt a vapor chamber cooling system or new dual-fan design. Until then, we’ve got your back with fans, internal cooling parts, and thermal modules designed to restore your device to peak performance.

4. Storage Upgrades & Easier Access

The original Ally came with a 512GB SSD—which filled up fast for AAA gamers. Rumors point to a 1TB model or tool-free SSD upgrades in the next-gen version. Either way, more storage = more games on the go.

If you’re feeling the pinch now, we stock compatible SSDs, upgrade kits, and all the tools you need to expand your existing Ally. Check out our Ally upgrade components to keep your system running fast and full.

5. Refined controls & button feedback

Ergonomics and feedback are subtle but critical. Some early users felt the original button layout and triggers weren’t quite as satisfying as a console controller.

The next-gen model may offer improved haptics, adjusted layouts, and more durable buttons. But if your Ally is showing wear and tear now, you don’t have to wait—grab OEM buttons and trigger kits straight from our inventory.

6. First Xbox handheld?

Recent teasers from Asus have ignited speculation about a potential collaboration with Microsoft to create the first Xbox-branded handheld gaming device. On March 31, 2025, Asus shared a cryptic post featuring its Omni robot alongside a screen displaying phrases like “more capacity,” “marathon stamina,” “faster speeds,” and “fresh look.”

Reports indicate that this device, possibly codenamed “Project Kennan,” aims to rival the Steam Deck and could be part of Microsoft's broader initiative, “Project Bayside,” to unify Xbox and Windows gaming experiences. While it's unclear whether the handheld will run a full Xbox OS or a customized Windows 11 interface, the integration of Xbox Game Pass and a user-friendly UI tailored for handheld gaming seems likely. The teaser also showcased the Ally and ROG Raikiri Pro controller merging into the new handheld, hinting at design elements inspired by Xbox hardware. With anticipated features like an AMD Ryzen Z2 chipset, enhanced battery capacity, and an ergonomic redesign, this next-gen ROG Ally could set a new standard in gaming.

7. When could we see it?

No solid info yet, but given Asus’ summer release pattern and rising chatter in the scene, a Q3 or Q4 2025 release seems likely. Computex 2025 this May could be a great opportunity! We'll be tracking it closely—and stocking any new ROG Ally parts and accessories the moment they become available.
